The opening ceremony last saturday was a complete success. The weather was magnificent and about 400 people came to take a look at the museum. The chefs from Greifinn did a splendid job barbecueing, even though the guests were more than we expected. Members from the Akureyri's car club came and assisted us and on the opening day they arrived on 15 old cars. Bjarki from Bónstöðin came and polished the cars. Click on the picture to see more pictures from the opening.

Now we have opened the museum this summer, a litle bit later than we are used to, but the snow in the last days of May put us a litle off schedule. We put a few cars in the new house last weekend, the showroom is ready and now we are working in the corridor between the showrooms. If everything goes as planned we are going to open the new house on July 8 with a litle party, and the older house was actually opened on July 8 2000.

The carpenders from Norðurpóll came to us in the beginning of April and started to isolate and put the steel on the walls and roof. On the picture to the right you can see Árni Brynjar, Benni, Hlynur and Smári put a plate in the ceiling. Last weekend they installed the first skylight, three to go. They are appr. half way putting the steel plates in place. Raflampar in Akureyri are making the lights for us. Now the only question is what shall we put on the floor, we have not decided that yet.

The picture to the right is taken in the new showroom, at left you can see the isolation for the roof and walls. The steel on the walls are waiting on the Man truck at right. The skylights come from Sindri and they are in Husavik now. Last sunday we took the Ford truck for a test drive. Despite of snow and very slippery road and some water leakage, it was a success, brakes and other parts was okay. Unfortunally it was getting dark so we could not get good pictures of the event.

I just finished to connect the brakes in the 1938 Ford. It took a long time to clean and free up all the small pieces which are in the mechanical (cable) brakes. It is fun to see how it all works when everything has come together, very different than our modern trucks. Now the test drive is getting closer, so we can see if the drivetrain is working like it should.

Merry Cristmas and a happy new year.

Thanks to all the visitors and all the people that have helped us during last year.

Today, Árni Brynjar, Björgvin and Bjarni was finishing to put the steel on the roof on the corridor between the houses. Now the house is closed and all the roofsheet is finished, but we are going to put the steel on the walls in the new year. Hopefully we can open the new house next summer. Ragnar Geirdal came and stayed for a few days, he was working in the Ford 1938 truck.

The builders from Norðupóll ehf. are putting up the frame for the new showroom. It is 720 squaremeter house with steel frame which H. Hauksson hf. imports from Finnland. The concrete floor was made Oktober 2 and few days later, we got a snowstorm for 3 days. But as you can see on the picture to here on the right the weather is very good today. We put the last vehicles inside yesterday, that is which are going inside this winter.

Alverk (Gunnar from Klömbur) is bringing gravel in the new house, under the floor. Árni Brynjar is taking the concrete mould from the last wall, it is the aisle between the houses. Like you can see in the picture, the winter has arriwed, and acctually the weather has been rather bad this fall. The weather forecast is a little better now and then we are going to try to make the concrete floor. Then we should be able to close the house in the next weeks.

August 10 2005.

Finally, the builders came this morning to start building the new house. Yesterday, we got a beautyful AMC Eagle, Guðmundur Rögnvaldsson and his wife Kristín Bjarnadóttir came and gave it to us. Last spring, Jörundur Traustason brought Ford Fiesta 1978, in very good condition, to us. His father, Trausti Gestsson bought it new. In June we got the old funeral car from Akureyri, it is Chevrolet from 1955. It is in stunning condition, just like new.

Now Gunnar from Klömbur is digging for the aisle between the showrooms. We are expecting the new house on the middel of June, but because of a busy schedule we have to wait for the constructors to begin their work. We have finished to prepare the exhibition for this summer and few schools have already been here to see it. So you see that the only thing we need is the weather to get a little warmer and the wind blowing from south, then everything would be perfect.

It has been awhile since I wrote something here, but the restoration on the Ford truck is going slowly but surely. A friend of mine, Ragnar Geirdal, paid me a visit and worked on the firewall. I came in touch with a man in the US, which is parting out truck like this one, so I can get parts from him, like the brake parts and so on. I was also working a litle bit in the blackout headlights on the Canadian Chevrolet.

In the first days of Desember, The Red cross in Húsavík gave the museum a snowmobile to preserve. It is Trac-master from the year 1975 and only driven just over 3.000 kilometers and in very good condition. The lack of snow has stopped us driving the snowmobile, but we got a litle snowstorm 24th and 25th of Desember, so we put it outside to take some pictures.

Now it is winter and outdoor work has stopped for a while, Gunnar finished the dirt vork in Oktober. We are going to start the concrete work as soon as the weather gets better next spring and build the house next summer. We put all the vehicles that we could inside in the first days of Oktober. I am working on a Ford 1938 truck. The drivetrain is mostly complete, exept the the brakes. This car had cable brakes, but most of them were converted to hydrolic brakes very quickly.

This morning, a very interesting car was added to our museum, it is a Citroen made in 1923. Jón Björnsson engineer owned this car and he made the whole body by pictures and drawings. Jón died last year and his son, Björn Brynjar was willing to sell the car. I contacted the presidents of two companies at Húsavík, Alli Geira and VÍS, and they decided to give the car to the museum and we are very grateful. The Citroen is in running condition.

The first batch of gravel was dumped in the foundation pit for the new showroom yesterday. It was Ford 1929, Chevrolet 1946, belonging to Jón Sigurðsson from Búvellir and Thames Trader who brought the first loads. On this occasion, we relived old times and shoveled with hand on the Ford. Old Ferguson, belonging to Ólafur Sigurðsson from Búvellir filled the Chevy and International B-275 filled the Trader. Gísli Sigurgeirsson filmed the event for the TV.

Last weekend, Ottó Snæbjörnsson and his son Magnús brought to us a very beautyful Taunus which they bought new on May 14 1965. The registration number on this car is A 140. Gunnar Jónsson from Klömbur is finishing to dig the foundation pit for the new showroom, hopefully we can begin to fill it with gravel next weekend. We are going to make the concrete walls and the floor this fall, if the weather allows it.

One of our friends, Jón Atli visited us last weekend with his paraglyder ( you have an engine with a propeller on your back and hang from a wing ). Jón took off from our field and shot a few pictures from the yard. As you can see we got quite a few visitors and there were around 400 names in the guestbook after last weekend. To the right on the picture you can see where we moved the trees away from our next building.

Today the museum got a good car, beautiful Toyota Crown deluxe year 1966. Steindór Bjarnason from Neskaupstaður gave the museum this car last June and Starri Hjartarson brought it to us today. These days we are preparing the building of a new showroom south-east of the current showroom. We need to move a few trees and some cars and machines. We hope that we can start to dig for the new house in August.

The day before yesterday, Anna Jóna Guðmundsdóttir contacted me and asked if I would like to own an old engine diagnosis and tester, which her father (Guðmundur Kristinsson Nýhofn 2) had owned. I phoned to our good friend, Benedikt Karlsson, and he was happy to help us. Benedikt and Kristjan Olafsson went to Nýhofn 2 yesterday and picked up few things, for example Crypton engine diagnosis and Mercury snowmobile with Nissan car engine.

Kristján and Benni, happy with the hunting.

The guests have now started rolling in at the museum, some of them bearing wonderful things. Mr. Hörður Sigmundsson brought a picture, shot at Sauðholt in Holt in the county of Rangárvellir. The picture shows a Tatra 1947. We have now put quite a lot of information onto the cars and machines page. If anyone has additional information or corrections please let us know by Email: sverrir@islandia.is

In celebration of having arranged all the museum artifacts for the summer we decided to elevate our spirits, literally. We took the AM General 1971 and drove to the top of Fellshnjúkur. We drove directly up from Ystafell and all the way over. From there we could see the Skipapollur (Ship's puddle) and the sandbanks in the river. The picture on the right is taken at nine o'clock in the evening in spectacular weather. The AM General is amazing on very rough ground.

I have not been able to update the webpage for a while since the computer was disconnected. The Caféteria was being painted and everything rearranged. The machines were moved outside and the museum floor cleaned. A portion of the cars was arranged for a photoshoot outside. The only thing missing was a lens wide enough to capture the whole fleet and the sun but word is the sun will be arriving soon here in the north!

Now I am trying to repair the doors and the tailgate on the Land Rover 1951. It is not easy to try to weld the aluminium together. On the picture on the right you can see part of the showrroom, the picture is taken from the top of a Bedford fire truck. It will be quite a task to move all the vehicles outside this spring and clean the floor and put them back to their places for the summer. We will do it in May.

We drove the Pony outside today and in to the showroom, it went very well, despite of a small oil leakage at the oil filter but it was easily fixed. I did make new fenders and the lid beside the battery. The only things that are left are the decals and the steering wheel, and I need to get the muffler from the US. Next I will start working on the doors and the tailgate on a Land Rover 1951.

I didn´t do much in the tractor in December. But now I am making new wire loom, it is very simple since there were no lights on this tractor. Many Ponys had lights but not this one. I found new gauges, just like the originals and a new cable for the choke. The radiator was in very good condition, just needed a good cleaning and paint.

Under progress.

November 4 2003.

I started the Pony today, everything seems to bee okay, the oil pressure is good and it is running fine. The main frame is completed and the front axle is in place. The steering gear was badly worn so I put new bushing in it. Now I will begin on the bodywork, like the fuel tank, grille, dashboard and more. I need to make new fenders and the left side, beside the battery.

Started to paint and putting together.

October 2 2003.

Today we pushed Massey Harris Pony tractor into the garage, the plan is to restore it this winter. I started to tear it apart and find out which parts should bee sandblasted and see what needed to bee replaced. The engine block was cracked because of water freesing and the crankshaft bearings were worn. We had another parts tractor, there I found good crankshaft and bearings, but one cylinder was badly rusted. I decided to try to weld the original engine block and use the crankshaft and bearings from the other.

Still tearing apart.
